LOL
Yep palm oil is another one. I do my best to avoid it. Scratch cooking helps and reading labels on hygiene products is a must but it’s bloomin’ difficult. The boy has the same problem with Rapeseed. I quite like the look of a field in full bloom, but it makes TERRIBLE honey! It sets rock solid and tastes bitter
I use Olive oil, I have a friend who has a 50 acre Olive grove in Spain and supplies me annually. Interestingly, he uses the last pressing for biofuel for his personal vehicle as it’s more cost effective I wouldn’t use Coconut oil because of it’s negative environmental impact.
Salt and sugar. Oh and tea.
EDITED AND REMOVED BY POSTER. Over and out.
Some supermarkets have now placed a cap on the maximum amount of oil you can buy. One has placed a cap of 2 1 litre bottles per purchase, I’m sure others will follow. Of course the MSM are calling it rationing! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10700687/Waitrose-rations-cooking-oil-two-bottles-sunflower-oil-shortage-deepens-Ukraine-war.html And then of course there are the profiteers 🙁 5L KTC Sunflower oil on Fleabay is selling for £19.99 (normal price £6.00ish)
This was posted by one of our large chain supermarkets on their website today. I know it’s a bit of a first world problem, we are still far from starving. Customer Information: Due to the current conflict in Ukraine, it may be necessary to substitute sunflower oil for other oils in some products. Rapeseed oil is the most likely replacement, but other oils may be used. Customer safety is very important to us, and we have taken care to ensure that there is no allergen risk from any of the substituted oils.
I did mean to say earlier. TIP: To make it easier to lift out your pot, I use an old teatowel folded twice lengthways to line the dent for the pot, in line with the handles (if there are any). When I make the basket cooker, I’m going to make a removable pouch to put the casserole dish in to make it easier to put in and lift out. 2nd Idea: When I was reading the instructions for the basket cooker, they were suggesting putting a tray of hot ash or sand in the bottom. Now I’m not going to do that, but I’m wondering if you had a pizza stone or maybe a cast iron griddle or trivet, whether heating it and placing in the bottom of the cooker would improve heat keeping qualities? Just a thought.
Thanks for the report. Really pleased that it turned out well for you and I look forward to the corned beef results. I’ve made a lot of stews this way so I’m hopeful your corned beef will work.
I was watching this on the telly at lunchtime, the chap being interviewed reckoned they have about 4 weeks’ worth. I have a feeling the stores will be stripped by tomorrow night. *Sigh* here we go again. He was saying that it’s not just bottled oil for the public, but crisps, chips, tinned tuna and bakery products that are going to be affected.
No probs Bill, perhaps it is worthy of it’s own thread
Sunflower oil: UK bottler has a few weeks worth left. Looks like it’s happening sooner rather than later. ‘The biggest cooking oil bottler for UK shops has said it only has a few weeks’ supply of sunflower oil left.Ukraine and Russia produce most of the world’s sunflower oil and the war is disrupting exports, said Edible Oils. The company, which packages oil for 75% of the UK retail market, is ramping up supplies of other oils for shoppers.Meanwhile, manufacturers of foods that contain sunflower oil, like crisps, oven chips and cereal bars, are reworking their recipes.‘
I have to agree with you Bill. This is not something that I would consider. Having had a quick look at how this stuff works, it does not reverse completely the effects of an opioid overdose, it simply buys 30-60 minutes to give a small window for professional help to arrive and if I’m honest, I wouldn’t want to be hanging around for that time waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The side effects can be severe, from causing a withdrawal crash- to heart attack and to try and keep a raging addict in situ or have to give CPR is not something I want to consider. Count me out on this one, I’m afraid.
I’ve just been looking at the link, and I have had an epiphany! I have an old round laundry basket that is redundant, soooo I’m going to make a ‘wonderbag’ to fit it. Will have to wait til payday, but I’ll keep you posted.
This article is kind of proof that when it comes to go-bags and BOBs one size does not fit all. There are commonalities in every bag, but depending on your location and what you consider your threat to be, there will be differences. Whenever I’ve looked at lists I’ve considered them advisory and added or taken away what I think I will or won’t need. From looking at the pictured items, your passport and phone seem to be a priority.
I never even thought to look! But I have one sitting in my basket now waiting for payday. I would love having a physical copy. Thanks!
Hi Gideon, Dutch ovens work very well. Oh and your chief box inspector is slacking….mine would have made himself comfortable in there long before I had a chance to put anything in it 🙂 LOL. I’m really looking forward to your results DP.
Since Christmas I have been keeping a weather eye on prices in my shopping basket and shortages. Vegetable and Sunflower oil availability has been hit and miss and price had gone up by 10pin the same time. Tinned meat has gone up 30p and I have started to see a rise in fresh meat and vegetable prices. I mentioned in an earlier thread that Growmore fertiliser has almost doubled in price since last season and other fertilisers have also seen a scary price increase. The UK is more or less self sufficient in flour, but I don’t think that won’t stop some corporate chancer selling this commodity on the world market to make a quick buck. It’s feed wheat we import so I’m expecting meat and dairy prices to rise as farmers pass on the costs, but I have a feeling there will be a number of farms that skip breeding cycles to try and mitigate costs. Obviously energy bills are rising and I think we are not done with that yet. High energy and fuel prices and fertiliser costs and scarcity are going to affect how farms are going to move forward with crop choice and set aside. I think whatever means you use to heat your home, in the coming months it is going to get more expensive. Maybe we need a frugal thread…..
The wartime Farm is another series I have watched and love. I had a bad dose of cooker range envy when Ruth Goodman fired up that paraffin stove! Ruth, Peter and Alex have made a number of historical series that a full of information that we as preppers could well make use of. Mainly of farming through the ages.
I think you’re right Pops. It does seem like we are over the hump of the bell curve of oil and gas production and heading down the slope. Bill speaks further of the rise and fall of civilisations and I can’t help thinking we are on the brink. Still not optimistic.
