Thanks for teaching me! I will try making some of these pumpkin pie leathers and see how they turn out. I’ll do the canned pumpkin route just to be easier on myself for my first time.
This recipe for Pumpkin Pie Leather sounds good. Does anyone know if I could used canned pumpkin instead of cooked pumpkin? If not, how do you cook pumpkin? 500 mL (2 cups) cooked pumpkin 45 mL (3 Tbsp) granulated sugar or honey 2 mL (½ tsp) pumpkin pie spice Puree ingredients until smooth. To turn your puree into fruit leather, follow the drying instructions on your manual
If you can boil water, you can store that heat in a hot water bottle and have personal warmth for a few hours.
I’ve found that the more expensive sardines like this one by Season or this one from WildPlanet taste less fishy and are more like tuna than the strong sardine smell. Also sold at Walmart.
Us smaller girls do have it a bit more difficult than a larger male, but there are things everyone can do. Clawing eyes, punching the throat or genitals, and other pressure points or sensitive areas. If it’s a real life or death situation, I am going to go full attack cat on someone. Use elbows, fingers, knees, chin, and anything pointy on your body.
That does make a lot of sense to cook meat before while you have the power. Then you just need to thaw and slightly heat. It would save quite a lot of energy. Pretty brave of you M.E. to try various things, but seems like it paid off well for you and you found some new favorites.
That sounds amazing!
Thank you for the reminder to check my winter clothing before winter comes. This was a good news roundup!
That is beautifully said. We are adaptable and figure things out when the going gets tough. Certain things will be harder for future generations, but they also will have more tools and knowledge at their disposal to combat and life with those challenges.
It sounds like you are having an incredibly busy end of summer. My advice is to list out all of the things you would like to do and get done, then sort that into NEEDS and WANTS, then sort that into either priority or level of ease of accomplishing. Pop out some of the short 5 minute tasks so that you feel success seeing things dropping off the list and are not overwhelmed by the long list. I admire you wanting to do so much prepping stuff while in the middle of everything you are doing, but it sounds like some of the things you mentioned should be placed before rotating through water so that you can be in a better state to do the prepping stuff. Social media is a time and mental energy suck, so staying off of that is helpful. I hope that things look better for you here soon. Take some time for yourself and do something fun to charge up your batteries.
It would be interesting to see the average home price and average utility cost to heat and cool those houses and compare that as well. Interesting chart!
I love my hot water bottle during the cold months and wrote a whole post about it.
There are these places around the world called Blue Zones where a combination of factors lead to people living longer than the societal average. Many of these blue zone communities are walkable cities and the social benefits of passing and walking by your neighbor turn into a longer and happier life. Sure wish I could live in such a community like I see on Hallmark movies.
Thank you for that information. I would have thought the correct course of action would be to plug it into a GFCI, but if there is accidental and unnecessary tripping, that could mean your basement would flood even though you have the right tools to prevent it.Glad I know now.
Sending a big virtual hug your way! You sure have been going through a lot. I know that feeling of thing after thing after thing after thing attacking you from many different angles, emotional, mental, physical, and all those can affect relationships as well. I hope your fiance is being supportive and there for you. Sorry your father-in-law hasn’t been the best, that makes things so much harder when you don’t have full support from them. That was an incredibly difficult decision to postpone your reception but was a very selfless thing to do. I know your parents will appreciate your care and service to them during this time. You are an incredible daughter! If I could give some advice, it would be to ask others for help. You have 160 people, (well 159, I wouldn’t ask your FIL for any help) that would love to help you in anyway possible. It is difficult to ask for help but all of those people love you and want to help you through this difficult time. You don’t have to do it alone. Two more advices… Rest. Your body and mind have been going through a lot, give it rest and recovery. And last of all, know that this will pass. You are going through some tough stuff right now, but I know it will be much better in a month or two and you will look back with pride and confidence in the trials you overcame. Think of it like that big PNW earthquake you are prepping for, you can survive this too.
$172 for this kit is so much cheaper than the after effects and damage that water can cause. Very nice summary showing the benefits of this kit. How do you safely power a pump like this without the power cable getting into the water? I don’t know anything about electricity or home wiring, so could a possible safety measure be to upgrade your wall outlets in the basement where electricity and water might meet with a protected GFCI outlet like is in your bathroom?
That is one of the best careers you can have to help you be more prepared and be of value during a disaster. Any knowledge you can gain during school will set you apart as a leader. It makes a lot of sense that immersing yourself in an alternative world, even if it is a stressful and disasterous world, can give you strength and power if you play as a character who can overcome those things. That will translate to the real world. When such-and-such challenge in school, at the hospital you will work at, or just in the world comes up just pretend you are that character in your game and tackle it like they would. Volunteering with EMS, teaching CPR classes, or even offering to teach a local boy scout troop the first aid merit badge will give you valuable fast tracked knowledge and be excellent on a resume!
Wellington, keep an eye on how you are doing mentally. Even those who are not prepping minded and don’t think about the future very much can get overwhelmed by everything going on. Here’s a forum thread I made where people can vent to each other about how they are doing mentally and get support from the group.
I have a jewelry repair kit with one piece that has rusted and it bothered me a lot, but I didn’t know what to do about it. After reading your post, I placed that rusted base piece in a cup with vinegar for a couple hours and used a old toothbrush to clean it off. Thank you so much for sharing this tip and getting my piece back to how it was.
One of the sad things about most of these news articles is that it ends with “And the alligator was captured and euthanized”. It’s just being an alligator…
