COVID-19: key developments for Thursday, June 11, 2020

The world has over 7.58 million cases.  Cases have grown globally by over 1.75 million since last week. This is a frightening increase in global case growth. The US has nearly 2.1 million cases and has had over 116,000 deaths. The US has gained over 22,000 new cases since yesterday.

Scores of COVID-19 testing locations were destroyed in US cities during the protests. Dr. Birx worries that lack of testing sites will compound the spread that is certain to follow after tens of thousands took to the streets in close contact with one another. Cities will need to scramble to create new sites, and anyone who has attended a protest should find out where their closest testing is (or will be).

Homelessness is likely to explode in this country as protections for housing payments related to the pandemic expire.  Evicting people during a pandemic will increase their risk of contracting the virus and increase the risk of accelerating the spread of the pandemic. Local, State, and Federal agencies will need to act or things will get a lot worse for everyone—and not just those facing housing trouble.

SARS-CoV-2 decimated a young woman’s lungs in the US. The infection literally ate massive holes in her lungs. She received a rare and life-saving double lung transplant.

It’s ramping up in the South. Tennessee models predict a significant resurgence. Alabama is hitting new highs:

A different kind of protest in Brazil:

Orange County, CA says masks are no longer mandatory. This follows the resignation of the OC’s Health Officer who had previously recommended mandatory mask-wearing. What could possibly go wrong, and how could a Health Officer’s reasonable recommendation be considered controversial in the first place?

American exceptionalism has fueled the virus’s spread in this country, knee-capped our response, and is killing us.

Public health experts warn that things are going to get worse. Community transmission and hospitalizations are increasing in at least 14 states.

Toronto is doing something decent:

The Stock Market is getting jittery over the rise in cases in the US. The Dow Jones has had its worst day since March. Air and Cruise Lines are being hit hardest, but they’re not the only ones:

42 million Americans are out of work. 1.5 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week. Unemployment claims have been rising for 10 weeks. Last week we were told that there had been an improvement in this trend, but that improvement turned out to be a “classification error.”
