https://www.theorganicprepper.com/should-i-stay-or-should-i-go/ Daisy is pushing her Bug Out Book – but there’s good advice in the article – I don’t agree with all of it and there’s additional steps to bugging out that should be on every prepper’s checklist >> no one ever mentions shutting off the utilities
I like the mix of open bed garden and the smaller raised beds >>> if nothing else the raised beds can be used as an early spring hot house – the side rails can be fitted with “hoop” brackets – poly sheet stretched over – just set your seeded pots or trays inside – secondary benefit is to warm up that plot of ground for early planting ….
you have a “damned if I don’t and damned if I do” scenario >> it doesn’t get much worse … you’ll want to bug-in if at all possible and as long as possible >>> makes you in a bugging out SHTF riding the crest of The Wave at the very best – more likely in the back with the flood aftermath ….. you’ll be contending with the devastated route allll the previous bug outs created >> blocked roads – abandoned vehicles – no resources – roadblocks – highly pizzed off locals – left behind bug outs >>> for bugging out it doesn’t get much worse best I can suggest is to be ever soooooooooo cautious about holding out for a bug-in – it’ll be a royal pain to pull the trigger and have it go false alarm – but for your situation it’s a definite life saving decision …. might want to think about a split bug out – get your child to safety for sure along with the bulk of your resources – follow up with Team 2 if the SHTF worsens ….
ditto on the vertical – both sides with an inter-mix of trellised veggies >>> you’d be surprised how well pole beans will climb with trellis hung tomatoes ….
if you’re a FULL & DEDICATED prepper to the lifestyle – there’s specifics that don’t crossover into the other lifestyle that have some similar aspects .. a great deal is mindset – there’s off gridders & homesteaders that won’t last thru Day 1 of a serious SHTF ……..
if the SHTF is serious enough – good chance the grid is down including water & sewer >>> any body of water will be drawing people like flies to sugar – not to mention the real possibility of sewage/pollution contamination beyond care … with the people’s encampments if they don’t crap out the place entirely – it would probably be too dangerous to approach much less work the area for fishing … in most regards I’d be recommending the more covert fishing methods like self fishers and trout lines – nite time possibilities there
not as much concern this of the year compared to the dead of winter – cell service is at least available in Northern WI – took many years to get the bare spots between Green Bay and Milwaukee covered …
not mentioned often as a “trap” >> a fishing gill net secured in the glide path of small birds feeding can secure enough to sustain you – don’t discount the smaller birds like starlings – nursery rhyme “black birds in a pie” has an actual background …
wire loop with mesh netting >>> looks like a fish landing net <<< for eazy fabrication you use a large rat trap as the movement device and trigger – sprinkle corn around in the area covered by your loop net and rig a few kernels to the trigger …
around here it’s all snares >>> often wanted to build one of the modified rat spring traps for netting birds – the bigger drop net bird flock catchers look neat if not practical ….
Camp McCoy in Central WI got a big slug of the Afghans – the locals made it known they wanted a closed gate policy – didn’t want to see groups wandering around the countryside …..

no guarantee – there’ll be people just about everywhere – the shitcan little scooters get 30mpg and that can be 100s of miles on a tank of gas …. and there’s 1,000s of people on the move between cities on the interstates – we used to call that mid-point “the collision point” where the evacuees meet each other coming out of the cities – the smart ones start exiting onto the state & country roads and spreading out looking to get home …. then you also need to consider the particular SHTF – you could have a FEMA evac of the cities to every available piece of real estate they can find – if you got a college, convention center, race track, county fairgrounds or empty factory locally >>> you could have 1,000s of evacs depending on FEMA and having little of nothing else – all potential SuperDome hellholes unleashed …. and if you follow the FEMA handbook – they can force communities to provide food & shelter to the evacs dropped off – bring them out of the cities on the secondary road routes and even the railroads – sprinkling them around based on a per population basis – a wide spot in the road town might get 20 staying at the local church …
there is no “fine line” between hoarding and prepping – actually insulting to any real prepper >>> you’re saying there’s a mental disability there … there’s hasn’t been anything lately – but in the past the hoarders with the front yard filled with old pallets and crushed aluminum cans tried passing themselves off as preppers – an excuse for their behavior – mainly looking for sympathy for the county fine $$$$ they just received …. you’ll find a great majority of preppers are very organized and directive in their decisions what to prep – and a great many are highly educated/trained, successful and disciplined … just because outsiders call preppers “hoarders” after a SHTF hits <<< like Covid >> and they can’t find gloves or masks – buying in advance on advice or intuitiveness and stockpiling is hardly “hoarding” – just the opposite
