Thank you for this well written article. I liked it very much, and so necessary to prepare for now, because it’ll get worse before it gets better. A bit scary, but I expected this. Thanks again. 👍👍 😷 😷
When I got married 43 years ago, I wished I learned how to survive in the woods. Surprisingly my late husband taught me all I needed to know. The mountains was his childhood backyard. He taught me how to make a small shelter from fallen branches, including an off-the-ground bed to minimize getting ground soaked. I know how to start a fire in the rain, and how to use a crayon to get a fire started. A crayon lasts about a good 20-30 minutes for heating and cooking. He taught me fishing, hunting, properly skinning, tanning, and making a small trap for catching small game or birds. He also taught us how to ride horses in the woods, dirt bike riding, and utility 4-wheelers. He always believed that women are much more than a “pretty face”. They can do almost anything a man can do, and need to be respected for that. He also taught both our daughters these very same things, and self defense. I will never forget my late husband. Hugs to you all.
I believe it’s best to be truthful with children. Don’t give them reason to lack trust in you as their parent. I like the above awareness and problem-solving shown above. Make them think calmly, and trust themselves to use wisdom. This will serve as a guide as they grow and mature. Best wishes to all parents, everywhere.
I I just remembered to mention that Pet shops or Amazon.com sell large or small collapsable pet bowls for B.O.B., also!! I have two of them. Good luck everyone.
Hello. If you are concerned about having to ditch your car, it may be a good idea to look into a backpack or vest you can wear, in order to carry your cats. They come in different colors and styles. Then you can use your hands to carry your B. O. B. (Bug Out Bag), in an emergency. If your cats’ crate is collapsable, you may tie that to your B.O.B., until you reach your campsite or destination. Then: 1. Set up the crate for your cats. 2. Immediately set up your camp tent, etc. 3. Walk your cats to calm them, fill their water and dry food. 4. Clean their bowls and put their (and your) food in a safe tight container. 5. Don’t let them wander because they may fall prey to: injury, stray dogs, coyotes, or mean people. * Dog owners may need to look into a back pack their dogs may carry. They come in All Sizes, and colors…camo-style, too. Go to Amazon.com, and look under Pet Supplies. Type in: dog backpacks. Chewy.com also carries them, as does Baxter.com. Best wishes for you and your cats.
HI. A grill is nice to have at home. So many options you have. Go to beprepared.com and see what they have. I have a small, metal folding stove that slips into my bug-out bag. I can use a small or large skillet and sauce pan on it. Heat up water for tea or coffee. Yes, I can use small bits of wood for it. I like it.
This breaks my heart. A hand held HAM radio can do so much. I am getting books to educate myself more on this remarkable radio. I also want a book on basic electronics for repairs. There are so many types of antennas to look into for myself. I need to prepare for the test for my license. Best $15. I will ever spend.
My late husband always told me: “Remain calm.” You can’t think properly, or plan if you panic.
Thanks.
Hi, CC. Yes, the COVID Pandemic has been a test of our endurance. My niece and her husband are homesteaders. They use the big, blue plastic water containers and attached a spout for their convenience. These blue containers are stackable. 5-gallon dispensers are fine. Remember, each person (children, too) needs a gallon of water a day. If your power is lost, you need a backup such as solar, battery, or a generator. You may want to consider a hand pump for your well. You know… the kind you see on farms, or horse stables. You can have a good water supply this way. There are videos to show how to install this pump. If you have pets, use a big water dish for them instead of going back and forth to fill their water bowl. The big water dish/bowl will last all day for the pets. Save your energy. This is what I do for my 2 dogs. Best wishes, CC.
HI. I’m 67, and enjoy the outdoors. I learned basic camping, hunting, fishing, and archery from my late husband. Both my daughters know these, and shoot as well. I have a small Jack Russell Terrier that hunts and returns rabbits, squirrels, and snakes (if it is poisonous, she’ll stay away). I have also, a Pitbull Terrier that serves as protection for me, and for companionship. I know what mushrooms to eat, and can start a fire in bad weather when outdoors. I prefer silent hunting with my longbow and broad heads. I do like Ruger handguns, too. I can throw an axe, and knife well. I’m just not too good a cook. Oh well… 😏. Nobody’s perfect.
