They aren’t technically matches, but did you by chance look at UCO Behemoth? It looks like a perfect combo of a match and a firestarter…

I did see the UCO Sweetfire stuff, but for this guide we limited the scope to wooden matches and match containers. There are a lot of these different kinds of starters out there, and I even keep something similar in my BoB, so and at some point we’ll probably do a roundup.

Behemoth is interesting is that they are lit exactly like matches. It’s basically Sweetfire with a match head, so far as I can tell.

Thank you for doing all the research for me. This is a GREAT page. I bought 8 of those AceCamp containers.

Thanks for an awesome review! I have one question – I assume the UCO Stormproof, Zippo Typhoon etc. are not strike-anywhere matches, so if you opt for a container (that isn’t the Cevinee one), do you have any suggestions for what I can bring to light these? Something that fights in the container perhaps?

You’re going to need a small striker strip. Both the Typhoon and the UCO Stormproof come with extra ones that you can store inside the container. Note that you can also start these matches by sparking them with a firesteel if you have to.

I have used kitchen matches in waterproof containers since the 1950’s and I would say that the general quality of the average match has decreased since that time, causing me to switch to Bic lighters, although Uco’s are a fine supplement.
I am not sure of the brand name, but the orange plastic container pictured on the far left of your container illustration is an almost perfect container for 18650 batteries. Some 18650’s are shorter than others and a small bit of cotton fiber (tinder for fires, perhaps?) renders them nice and snug.

While I haven’t been using matches for as long as you hikermor, I do remember using old boxes of matches in my grandma’s house (probably from the 80’s or 90’s) and even those were better than the ones you get at the grocery store today. I bought a box about two years ago and was like “what the heck are these cheap things!?” They weren’t the best.
