COVID-19: key developments for Friday, June 12, 2020

There are over 7.7 million global cases.  The US has over 2.1 million cases. Cases have grown by over 25,000 in the US since yesterday, with over 700 deaths in that same period. There is a slight downtrend in daily deaths in the US. There have been nearly 427,000 deaths around the world.

Worried about the economy? It’s about to get worse. It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting another round of stimulus checks, and the federal unemployment bump of $600 per week is set to expire at the end of July. Landlords will be allowed to evict again, student loans will come due again in the fall, and mortgage extensions will stop.

North Carolina may have to reinstate stay-at-home rules if cases continue to rise as they have. North Carolina is slated to hold the Republican National Convention this August. RNC organizers may want to have some backup locations identified.

Restaurants in Houston are shutting down because of sick employees. Harris County has a public health threat level system which is currently set to orange, meaning the threat is significant and that contact with other people outside of the home should be minimized. Meanwhile, Houston student athletes are getting sick:

15 prison inmates have died from the pandemic virus in CA. Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Riverside County is one of the worst-hit prisons in the state, and has just had another inmate COVID-19 death. Two corrections officers have also died.

Disneyland plans to open in July, and many feel it’s a mistake:

The State Department will start processing passports again and they’re working to clear a backlog of 1.7 million applications:

Florida’s former COVID-19 data scientist has launched her own dashboard. She asserts that state officials are both under-counting cases and misrepresenting testing numbers.

Brazil’s death toll now surpasses Britain’s:

The pandemic is accelerating in Africa and in the Middle East. Africa has more than 200,000 cases. Adhering to the Pareto Principle, 20% of the countries in Africa are driving 80% of the cases. Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, and Sudan have the most deaths. South Africa has been hit the hardest. There are more than 670,000 cases in the Middle East. Pakistan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia are the hardest hit in that region, but cases are rising in a number of other countries in the region as well.
