Just listened to a recent NPR episode from “The Indicator from Planet Money” which was called “Why We Weren’t Prepared For A Pandemic”. I thought it was really good. It touched on normalcy bias, optimism bias, and herd mentality. It also talks about why some businesses and government policy makers aren’t so great (to put it nicely) at preparing for disasters. You can check out the episode here: https://www.npr.org/2020/12/23/949598713/why-we-werent-prepared-for-a-pandemic
Has anyone ever tried out the LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1 Phone Charger? It’s a solar charged light and cellphone charger. Looks pretty good to me, especially since it’s supposed to be waterproof and sandproof. PackLite Max 2-in-1 Power Lantern Here are some other specs: 150 lumens of bright LED light on Turbo mode Can run for up to 50 hours on Low mode Recharges via solar power in 16-20 hours of sunlight Recharges via USB input in 2 hours The USB output port will recharge your phone in 2-4 hours depending on the type of phone
If you live in hurricane territory, make sure you get powdered baby formula since it’s not dependent on refrigeration. It’s a pain to make, especially when your baby is hungry, but I’d have a few containers of powder, as a back up. Other items I’d prioritize: baby powder and rash cream. They poop so often in the early days that it’s hard to avoid a bad/painful rash. Powder and a rash cream will expedite the healing of the skin down there. infant & children’s tylenol, Advil, Motrin rectal thermometer wipes (water wipes are great during a bad rash, but no need to buy in bulk)
I think Cast Away would be a good addition to this list. You get to see Tom Hanks struggle through so many survival skills both mental and physical in that movie. Thanks for putting the list together!
Would you guys trust amazon for an N95 mask or would you recommend another retailer?
Do you guys have a recommendation for potassium iodide tablets? Seems like something you wouldn’t want to skimp on and end up with something counterfeit. Great article!
Really love the site and appreciate all the hard work you guys put into gear reviews. My only suggestion would be to post blog entries on podcasts of relevance to your site. I’ve had a hard time finding podcasts on the subject that are very good (or not extreme/a little crazy. One that I did enjoy was “The Big One”, which touched on the next big San Andreas earthquake.
