News roundup for Tue, Jul 6, 2021

There were widespread ransomware attacks hitting companies in 17 countries over the weekend.

The heat was so severe in the Pacific Northwest recently that grocery stores had trouble keeping food properly temperature-controlled. It was so hot, the roads buckled:

A gas pipeline rupture caused the ocean in the Gulf of Mexico to be on fire this week. I kid you not:

The Caspian Sea is also on fire. Also because of a gas pipeline:

In more bizarre shortages news, Wing Stop anticipates that they won’t be able to stock enough wings. They’re cooking up thighs now, too! They’ll be available to order online for delivery, but the company hopes to incorporate chicken thighs into its regular menu as well. This plan tells me that they anticipate shortages beyond the immediate term.

The Feds are way behind in completing background checks as gun purchases surge. 316,000 are still pending. There were over 12 million background checks in the queue last year alone. The percentage of incomplete background checks is rising over time.

There’s been a terrible landslide in Japan. It occurred after record rain for the area:

Tyson has recalled ~8.5 million pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken products for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.  One death and multiple hospitalizations have been linked to the contaminated food:

A 12-year-old shot an armed burglar who had forced his way, and the child’s mother, into their home. The burglar died at the scene in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.

There’s a large RSV outbreak throughout the American South. RSV is a respiratory virus that can cause pneumonia in children and the elderly. It can also be deadly for infants:

The world has over 184.9 million COVID cases. The world has gained 2.8 million cases in the last week. There have been nearly 4 million deaths in total. The US has a cumulative 34.6 million cases. Over 621,000 Americans have died. The US has gained about 3,600 new cases since yesterday. There have been only 18 deaths reported in the US in the last day, but since it’s a holiday weekend many cases have not yet been reported. India, Indonesia, and the UK have the highest number of new cases per day as Delta gains a foothold in each respective country.

Pfizer is not as effective at battling Delta as it is wild-type SARS-CoV-2, but it’s probably the best the world has to offer at the moment:

Britain plans to lift pandemic restrictions soon, despite being in the top-three countries for case gain right now. This is also happening in the context of Delta taking hold in the region:

That ransomware attack was crazy. We heard about it from an acquaintance who had to go in to work instead of attend 4th festivities because his business was crippled. They paid $350k to get back to work. The shame of it is that it only encourages the crooks with great profits.
