Welcome Bart Myself and my family are an hour west of your ao. Licensed General Class Amateur Radio Operator, been prepping about 2 years, know how to turn some wrenches and currently work as a maintenance electrician. Your assessment is about right Bart I know of a national online presence of preppers and not many in Illinois are from central Illinois or even from western Iowa that are on that platform.
