How long does it take to set up and take down? It’s a good looking stove and doesn’t look too heavy of cumbersome.
That is very impressive to have 2 months of food, 1 month of water, and many other things in such a short period of time! What novel did you read about the EMP? Do you recommend it?
I saw that floating around on social media as well. “Well, we have 17 days left of diesel…” People sure were panicking and taking it as gospel truth that we were only two weeks away from our entire economy from collapsing. To the news outlets that are spreading this, I don’t understand how they don’t feel bad about causing so much stress and anxiety among their viewers. Thank you ThePrepared for bringing some fact checking and comfort to your viewers, I hope you sleep well at night.
I’ve come to grasp that things are just going to overtime cost more, be of lesser quality, be filled with more preservatives and junk, and harder to find. Knowing how to make things yourself, be that a shed or vegetables in the garden, are ways we can combat the trends of society.
Those amaranth plants look like they would make a good decorative dividing wall between property lines.
I live in the Salt Lake valley area of Utah, USA. Having a 7.0+ earthquake and fear of drought is something that is always on my mind. We have to secure our gear and furniture to the walls so they won’t tip over during an earthquake. I probably should invest in some extraction devices such as hard hat, gloves, goggles, and a floor jack to be able to rescue my family or neighbors if houses were to collapse. A recent prep we got is this 260 gallon behemoth of a water tank.
For $230 (still $50 less than the one you have listed there), you can get 200W of 12V flexible solar panels. They come with connectors and a charge controller. You can power larger power stations, car batteries, and all the smaller devices you want. If you already have two smaller panels, don’t get a third, get some larger ones that can power more things.
It’s not as fancy as some of the lanterns discussed on here, but I got a Pocket Juice collapsible lantern from TJ Maxx as a gift last year and am now just getting around to unboxing it. Just like the main article says, the collapsible models are prone to crinkling. I had to pull it apart gently and already was feeling it being slightly crushed. This is the weakpoint of the lantern. It is quite bright though and could fill a tent with light or be enough to read by. When you collapse it, it goes into flashlight mode, and this was pretty bright as well. A neat feature is that this lantern can be charged off of the sun or by the USB cord. The cord can also be used to charge a cell phone, although I doubt you would be able to charge a phone completely with this unit, but might give you enough juice for a phone call or two. I wouldn’t recommend this lantern for your main preps, but it isn’t too bad or expensive to give as a gift to someone who is not prepared to at least give them something.
Our city tap water is safe to drink, but is absolutely disgusting tasting to drink. It tastes like strong chemicals and bleach. And this is a new house build in a new neighborhood so it isn’t some outdated system. We installed a reverse osmosis system under our kitchen sink and the taste is perfect! It tastes like water now. I highly recommend getting one of these systems just for the good tasting water.
Thank you for the great article. I bought one of the 260 gallon tanks from Sure Water because of your recommendation. It brings a whole nother level of comfort knowing that we have clean drinking water stored up. It wasn’t too difficult to move into place when it was empty. The website says it weighs 2245 pounds when full and I’m trying to decide if I need to strap it to the wall to prevent it from tipping during an earthquake. It isn’t much, but I placed it on a small piece of wood to get it up off the floor ever so slightly. In the future I will have to design a way to rise it up further. Wood pallets can hold around 2800 pounds, but I would want to reinforce that with additional supports to feel more comfortable.
Doritos bags will now have 5 fewer chips thanks to inflation
Very great article. In the article you mention a fat rope and how it has a 5 year shelf life and needs to be stored in certain ways. A product that I enjoyed and that I feel is superior is Black Beard’s fire starter rope. It’s a handmade product in the USA from USA materials, windproof, waterproof, infinite shelf life, non toxic, odorless, and burns for 4 hours per rope. Here’s a video trying to light the rope that was soaked under the kitchen faucet. It wouldn’t light with Black Beard’s electric lighter, but using a Zippo flame it caught and burned really well. In the following video I caught a pile of dry tinder on fire with the electric lighter. Even though this product is waterproof and it does produce a great flame while wet, this video shows that the dry tinder produces a flame twice the height of it’s wet counterpart. All-in-all, the Black Beard fire starter rope is a great product that I will continue to buy. Just a little bit goes a long way and a single rope will last you many fires. I would argue that this fire starter rope is superior to any of the other options listed in the article due to how big the flame is, it’s durability, ease to catch a spark, and being totally waterproof.
With lumber prices rising check the “cost to rebuild” limit on your insurance. If your house was previously appraised for $250,000 but now with inflation and high prices of materials it may actually cost $280,000 to rebuild. You will have to come up with the $30,000 difference. The Federal government has increased the Federal Fund interest rate and they are planning on additional rises coming up. This means that if you have variable interest rates on credit cards, car loans, or mortgages your interest rates have gone up. Be aware of this in your budget, pay off loans and debt ASAP, call your lender and tell them what a great customer you have been for so many years and ask if they could lower it for you, look if it’s a good time to refinance. Looks like the theme for 2022 is “Everything costs more now”. Even our debt costs more.
