Klonopin (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine drug that is used to treat seizures and anxiety. It's part of a group of medications known as central nervous system (CNS) depressants. They provide calming and anti-anxiety benefits in the brain. Klonopin is a receptor-specific drug within the brain, known as GABA receptors. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter which reduces neuronal activity, which is beneficial in reduction of anxiety and relaxation. In addition, it enhances the effects of GABA. Klonopin slows down the activity of neurons and creates the effect of calming. Klonopin is approved by the FDA to treat the following conditions Anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder that is not accompanied by agoraphobia, as well as the disorder of social anxiety.
