Thanks for the response and the source. I did find this source citing the 2018-2019 stats that put the number of deaths at 61,000: time.com/5610878/2018-2019-flu-season/

Just a quick corrective note as to the influenza mortality figure given above of ~80,000 per year in the U.S. The CDC mortality data from 2017 (the most recent I could find on a quick search) was given as 45,000 for influenza/pneumonia category. Otherwise, this is a very informative article.
