Lead blanket

I am building a tiny shelter along the lines of a trench with a roof and then layered dirt and tarp on top. Would a layer of lead blanket (0.5mmpb lead lined x-ray protection) between the dirt cut down much, if any, on gamma?  Thank you!!

Yes, lead is great radiation shielding. A good thick layer of dirt also serves as radiation shielding. 

 

Since it sounds like you’re trying to build a fallout shelter, here’s a book that includes instructions for building a shelter to survive a nuclear attack, intended to be built DIY in about two days. Probably better to start from a recipe rather than designing something new.
