Home security

I just had a break-in in my community. Any recs for protecting doors and windows? And would any of these double as protection from storms? For example, impact-type film over the windows.

Impact-resistant windows are great protection from both burglars and storms. But it only works well if you install new windows and strong window frames around them. And they’re quite expensive, in the ballpark of $1k per window. I wouldn’t trust films added to existing windows. And so far I haven’t been willing to pay for the good stuff. But I know people who have and are quite happy with them: peace of mind regarding hurricanes and substantially lower home insurance.

These articles should be helpful with overall hardening your home. There are lots of steps you can take that are less expensive than impact windows, so maybe save those for later.
