Great article! I knew about the rubbing the can on concrete to open it up, but never had seen it done.

For those of you who are looking for a good can opener, I would HIGHLY recommend the smooth edge can openers like this one. You’re less likely to get cut, you could use the left over can for more purposes since there isn’t any jagged edges, and the lid can be replaced back on the can since it was such a clean cut that will keep the contents a bit more protected if you don’t finish everything in the can.

Also, get some of these pet food can covers. Such a great way to seal up the can if you don’t finish it all in one sitting. Super cheap too.

My wife has one similar to that and loves it, but I’m too dumb to figure it out. I prefer the old-fashioned two-legged can opener with the big gears.

Solid information and interesting to see your analysis on how it worked for you. If you store cans, you definitely need multiple ways to be able to open them. Your ‘Far Side’ comic is spot on for many people. I was familiar with most but not all of these techniques — admittedly, I do need to practice and teach them to my kids.
