So glad I found this site….I know very little about radios, and have been trying to educate myself a bit, but there are so many radios, so many circumstances etc, that it is totally confusing to me. So, please bear with me, as I lay out what I am looking for. I am very concerned about this country getting hit with an EMP or worse. Communication with family is so important to my wife and I, should the grid go down. We have 2 sons about 30 miles away and another that is 60 miles from us. From what I have learned, it appears that a ham radio is what is needed for our application here in Maine, which has a lot of ridges, mountains etc. I will be getting my tech license and maybe general ASAP. So questions: should I be looking at handhelds, base station,or maybe mobile…all of which will be used in our very protected camp, and what radio brands would you recommend? Will an external antenna with some height be necessary? I plan on power source to be battery and solar power. I would appreciate any and all answers and advice that would help this very novice and inexperienced radio guy. Gary
