I've had some sort of kit put together for some time now. I was always playing with it and tweaking it here and there. But it never really came together until I read an article by Patrick of Kifaru. Patrick calls his kit a "Possibles Pouch" which has stuck with me. This man really knows his stuff and has been out in the field for a very long time! If you havn't read the article I highly recommend that you do.
So here is what I put together after reading the article. Everything but the nesting stainless steel cup fits into assorted sizes of Kifaru pull-outs. These pull-outs really helped me get things together and organized. Items are much easier to get at now because I know exactly where they are. I plan on picking up some pull-outs made of different materials so that I can pick them out be touch. This will be handy in the dark. I'm also trying to find something a little more compact than the nesting cup too. I've been toying with the idea of a MSR Stow-away pot.
Here is everything sitting on the pullout where it stores.
This is the first aid kit. There are a few more items that I would like to add and will probably move to a pull up one size larger. Then again I could get rid of a couple pairs of gloves and carry fewer meds. The first aid kit has always been a hard one for me. I'm not all that knowledgable on the subject and need to get some training.
This is just some general stuff. I ditched the bowl and replaced it with a nesting cup that a nalgene bottle fits into. The cup and nalgene bottle dont fit into the large pullout with everything else. In the picture I have the following -50ft Paracord -Few feet of duct tape -Space Blanket -Butane Lighter -Strike Anywhere Matches (far to many, I need to remove some) -Glowstick in adjustable output holder -LED Flashlight (will replace with small keychain light) -Toilet Paper in zip baggy
This is the food pullout. In here I have the following. -2 Clif bars -2 Packets dry gatorade (makes 32oz, perfect for a nalgene bottle) -Titanium flatware that was replaced with titanium spork -1oz Lemon Pepper -1oz Lawery all spice
Hatch gloves and Wiley X Roamer II glasses with xtra lenses.
All of this packs into a Large Kifaru Pull-out. It is both handy and convenient. This goes with me everywhere I go.
Remember the whole point is to have a small setup that you will have with you everyday. The contents should cover everything that you might see as a possibility. If you pack to much and the setup gets to heavy or combersome you're probably not going to carry it. All the gear in the world isn't going to help you if it's sitting at home in a closet when you most need it. |
